Hospital Tax
House Bill 1, Ohio's 2010-11 biennial budget, imposed a new tax on hospitals. Ohio hospitals are paying $718 million in taxes, but the real cost is jobs lost. The state budget should not be balanced on the backs of hospitals.
This new tax could not come at a worse time for hospitals and for the state's economy. Hospitals are the strongest sector of Ohio economy and historically have retained most of their jobs while other sectors slashed. Half of Ohio's nearly 200 hospital have already laid off employees and more layoffs are planned if the tax burden isn't lifted.
OHA's HUT 1 Task Force is working to seek equity in the new hospital tax. OHA's HUT 2 Task Force is making long-term recommendations on policy and strategy to safeguard hospitals’ future state budget interests.
State operating budget for fiscal years 2010 and 2011.
