The Fort Hamilton Hospital is excited to be celebrating its 75th
anniversary on May 1, 2004. Fort Hamilton has a rich heritage as a
hospital built by the community, for the community. On January 1,
1925, a group of 21 women and men from Protestant and Jewish
congregations held the first meeting of the Butler County Welfare
Club, which later became the Fort Hamilton Hospital Association. By
October, more than 4,000 community members had been recruited to the
hospital movement. In just 15 days during March of 1926, an
aggressive capital campaign generated more than 8,500 pledges
totaling nearly $500,000. When construction was complete three years
later, 14,000 people came to a hospital open house to see what they
had helped to build.
The 108-bed hospital that opened its doors on May 1, 1929, was a far
cry from the state-of-the-art facility The Fort Hamilton Hospital
has become today. The hospital is now licensed for 307 beds and
offers cutting edge technology. In the last three years, Fort
Hamilton has invested $32.2 million in the latest equipment and
expansions needed to keep up with its rapidly increasing patient
volume.
