As an executive assistant to Berna Bell, Jonathan Archey,
Charles Cataline, Ryan Biles and John Callender in OHA’s Policy
department, Valerie prepares HMO annual financial statements and
researches government Web sites for health care-related articles,
studies, reports, testimonials and publications. This information allows
OHA state and federal team staff members to monitor various
health-related issues that may impact Ohio hospitals and health care
industries. Valerie joined the OHA staff in 1990. She is from Worcester,
Mass., and has studied at Columbus State University and PSI Computer
Science Institute.

Deborah is an employment specialist in OHA’s
Employment Services department. Prior to joining OHA in 2006, she was an
independent contractor, representing clients in unemployment
compensation hearings before the Ohio Review Commission. Deborah brings
nearly two decades of experience working in the unemployment
compensation field to her current and future responsibilities. She has
represented Ohio hospitals, major corporations and individuals in
unemployment compensation hearings. Deborah’s hometown is London, Ohio.
Jonathan

Jonathan serves as OHA’s federal lobbyist and helps keep
hospital advocates apprised of the changing winds of federal health care
legislation. Managing OHA’s interaction with Ohio’s Congressional
delegation, he coordinates grassroots advocacy and representation
efforts on federal issues and is a liaison between member hospitals and
national health care organizations. Jonathan also coordinates the
efforts of the OHA’s Council of Teaching Hospitals. Prior to joining the
OHA team in 2000, Jonathan served as a legislative aide in the Ohio
House of Representatives and as a public policy intern in the Parliament
of Ireland. Originally from Delaware, Ohio, Jonathan holds a degree in
political science from Wittenberg University.

Management (SHRM). Prior to joining OHA in 2006, Amy was employed for
six years in the human resources department of the Ohio attorney general
and the state auditor’s office.

Executives (ACHE). Originally from Columbus, she has a bachelor’s degree in
government from Smith College and a master’s degree in business
administration from the Ohio State University Fisher College of Business.

history and is originally from Tampa, Fla.

fiscal matters affecting Medicare, Medicaid and health insurance,
federal relations with Congress and the executive branch, Hospital Care

of the OHA Strategic Direction. He serves as chair of the Ohio Hospital
Capital and OHA Solutions and chair of the Ohio Health Council. He is a
member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association and the
American Society of Association Executives. Prior to joining OHA's staff
in 1980, John worked at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
for 10 years. John’s hometown is St. Joseph, Mich., and he is a graduate

As president of OHA since 1989, Jim regularly travels across
the state speaking to community and business groups about issues of
importance to Ohio hospitals and the communities they serve. A native of
Ludington, Mich., Jim earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from the
University of Michigan’s School of Business Administration and a
master’s degree in labor and industrial relations from Michigan State
University. In January 1999, Jim was appointed an American Hospital
Association commissioner to the Joint Commission’s Board of
Commissioners. He is also an ex-oficio member of the OHA Board of
Trustees. Jim belongs to the American College of Healthcare Executives
and the Ohio and American Societies of Association Executives. Before
joining OHA, Jim served as president of the Maine Hospital Association
for four years and worked for 15 years with the Michigan Hospital
Association.

As part of the federal policy staff, Charles is responsible for
Medicare, Bureau of Workers’ Compensation policy and reimbursement, Medicaid
reimbursement and all finance, admitting and patient financial services
policies and procedures. He is also involved with other health care
organizations such as the Outpatient Medicare Technical Advisory Group, the
Editorial Advisor Board for the American Hospital Association’s Coding
Clinic for HCPCS and the Healthcare Financial Management Association. Prior
to joining OHA's staff in 1980, Charles was the business office manager at
Mount Carmel East and held financial service jobs with Mount Carmel Medical
Center. Charles is a native of Columbus, Ohio, and earned a bachelor’s
degree in social work from the Ohio State University.

Susan is a member of the employment
services group supporting Brenda Slagle. She oversees all aspects of the
unemployment process, including but not limited to: training supervisors,
processing unemployment claims and counseling and preparing attendees for
upcoming hearings. Susan also attends unemployment compensation hearings set
before the Ohio Review Commission. She has more than 25 years of experience
in customer service and six years in the field of unemployment compensation.

OHA team in 2007.

Scott Conaway

Scott provides internal support of all OHA-based Web pages and
sites and serves as contact for all Web-related issues. Scott’s duties
include overall network and PC problem-solving, coordinating internal
and external support of existing hardware, and software programs.
Additionally, he manages licensure compliance for software programs, SSL
certificates and CarePaqs for the server. Scott earned his bachelor of
arts degree in business information from DeVry Institute of Technology
in 2000. Before joining OHA in 2005, Scott worked for Horizon
Chillicothe Telephone as a Network Support Specialist. Scott is a native
of Kingston, Ohio.

with its advocacy efforts, Stacey administers the political action

bachelor’s degree in business education from Miami University. Her previous employment includes
teaching positions in New Orleans and Upper Arlington High School

Donna serves as executive assistant to Mary Yost, Mary Sterenberg
and Tiffany Himmelreich with the Public Affairs department. She
maintains aspects of the membership database, the Tobacco-Free Hospitals
page for OHA’s Web site and serves as liaison for the department, member
hospitals, media representatives and the general public. Donna assists
in resolving consumer complaints by referring individuals to hospitals’
designated consumer advocate or patient representative. She came to OHA
with a background in administrative assistance, marketing and broadcast
production. Donna studied at Ohio University and the Ohio State
University. Originally from Long Island, N.Y., she has lived in Ohio
since 1967. Prior to joining OHA in 2005, Donna was the administrative
manager of an international transportation company.

Reed works to enhance OHA’s
relationships with the various health systems throughout Ohio and
develop programming for hospital trustees. Prior to joining the OHA
staff in 2004, Reed served as vice president for health services and CEO
of the Ohio State University (OSU) Health System. He has also held the
position of executive director of the Ohio State University
Hospitals. In addition, Reed is a previous chair of the OHA Board of
Trustees and of the University HealthSystem Consortium Board of
Trustees. He is the treasurer for the Access Health Columbus Board and
is a member of the OSU Self-Insurance Board. He also serves as chairman
of the board for University OptionCare , LLC. Reed earned his master of
science in health services administration at the Ohio State University
and his bachelor of science in engineering from the U.S. Military
Academy (West Point, NY). Reed is originally from Tiffin, Ohio.

operating officer of Affinity Health System in Wisconsin. His previous
experience includes 14 years at Blanchard Valley Health System in Findlay,
where he served as president of Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center and
chief operating officer. His experience also includes 15 years at the Ohio
State University Hospital. A native of West Lafayette, Ohio, Cliff earned
dual bachelor's degrees in production and operations management and
industrial relations in addition to a master’s degree in business
administration from the Ohio State University. Cliff also holds a
certificate in lean health care from the University of Michigan. He is a
member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

University in communications and theatre arts. Prior to joining OHA, Nancy
spent more than 20 years with several Ohio hospitals in managerial, sales
and educational capacities and as a patient representative.

and training for several national companies, including Eastman Kodak and
T-Mobile USA. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Amber also has lived in Peoria,

from the University of Michigan and previously served as the director of

Jean leads
OHA’s workforce and clinical policy development. She serves as the
primary liaison with health care licensing boards including the Ohio
Board of Nursing, State Medical Board of Ohio and the Ohio State
Pharmacy Board; as well as the Board of Regents and other state
departments associated with workforce investment. In 2006, Jean
completed the Robert Wood Johnson's Nurse Executive Leadership Program,
a national program for advanced leadership development. Prior to joining
OHA's staff in 1999, Jean was director of nursing practice at the Ohio
Nurses Association and a staff nurse with Riverside Methodist Hospital.
Originally from Brookville, Ohio, she earned her bachelor’s degree from
the Ohio Wesleyan University Riverside School of Nursing and her
master’s degree from the Ohio State University.

Providing legal counsel to OHA staff and its members, Rick
leads and supports issue advocacy involving legislative or executive
branches. He is the primary liaison between OHA and the Ohio Department
of Health. Prior to joining the OHA staff in 1985, he earned a
bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the College of Wooster and both a
master’s degree in law and society and a juris doctor from the
University of Denver College of Law. Rick also earned a certificate in
Health Care Management from the Ohio State University, and previously
worked as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services. He is active in various organizations including FAMOHIO, Inc.,
a charity serving Ohio's bleeding disorder community. A native of
Tiffin, Ohio, he is a longtime adjunct instructor at Wittenberg
University and in Central Michigan University's Master of Science in
Administration program.

Brenda oversees OHA’s Unemployment Program. Her
responsibilities involve training hospital management staff, assisting
in the processing of claims, coordinating schedules for representation
hearings before the Ohio Review Commission and generating reports for
monthly charges. Brenda also oversees OHA’s Workers’ Compensation Group
Rating Program. A member of the OHA team since 1978, Brenda is from
Westerville, Ohio.

Greg is responsible for all printing services at OHA. This
includes directories, weekly and monthly publications, educational
programs and OHA brochures. He joined the OHA team in 1989 after working
in the Blue Cross of Central Ohio print shop and the Personal Service
Insurance Co. print shop. Greg is a native of Columbus, Ohio.

Plus, CEOhio and OHA’s annual Community Benefit Report. She
also coordinates Public Affairs’ special projects and oversees content
and design for all Web sites managed by OHA. Originally from
Springfield, Ohio, Mary joined OHA's staff in 2002 after earning a
bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ohio Northern University and a
master’s degree in journalism from Ohio University.

As a member of OHA’s Data
Services staff, Virginia serves as liaison with the hospitals
participating in OHA’s CARE System. She is also responsible for the
preparation of reports for the various quality collaboratives. Prior to
joining OHA in 1995, Virginia was a data associate for the Greater
Cincinnati Health Council. She earned her bachelor’s degree in economics
and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Santo Tomas in
Manila, Philippines, her hometown.
Rosalie Weakland

Rosalie advises members on the Joint Commission and is the
contact person for ORYX-related (core measures) issues and the
Continuous Service Readiness program. In addition, she is staff support
to the Ohio Patient Safety Institute. Before joining the OHA staff in
2000, Rosalie was the manager of performance improvement and informatics
at Summa Health System. She earned her RN from the Mercy School of
Nursing Diploma Program and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in
nursing from the University of Akron. Originally from Loudonville, Ohio,
she is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the
National Association of Healthcare Quality.

Debbie is the administrative officer for the Federal Policy
department and is responsible for committee organization. She also
coordinates scheduling activities with Ohio’s allied hospital
associations, works with OHA’s federal advocacy efforts and works with
Medical Opportunities of Ohio, Labor Law Project, OHA Salary Survey and
the Ohio Health Council. A native of Ironton, Ohio, Debbie joined OHA's
staff in 1982.

Mary coordinates the president’s schedule, travel and speaking
engagements and all functions relating to the OHA Board of Trustees, the
Executive Committee and the Nominating Committee. She also belongs to
the national Association of Healthcare Administrative Professionals (AHcAP)
and the Ohio Society of Healthcare Administrative Professionals (OSHAP).
Prior to joining the OHA staff in 1997, Mary worked in fund raising for
the United Negro College Fund. Originally from Hazelton, Pa., she earned
a bachelor’s degree from College Misericordia in Dallas, Pa.
Brendan Woulfe

administration of SQL servers and the design, development and management of
OHA data reporting functions. Brendan obtained his bachelor’s degree in
computer engineering technology from DeVry Institute of Technology. His
previous work experience includes serving as the database administrator for
American Showa, Inc. A native of Gerry, N.Y., Brendan joined OHA’s team in
2007.

Mary oversees the Public Affairs department, which includes internal and
external communications, media relations, public relations and the
Foundation for Healthy Communities. An associate since 1992, Mary came
to OHA from the Columbus Dispatch,
where she worked as a reporter for 19 years. Under her leadership, the
Public Affairs department at OHA has won several awards from the Ohio
Society of Association Executives. Mary’s hometown is Columbus, Ohio,
and she earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from the Ohio State
University.
Susan Zabo

Susan works with member
hospitals on environmental issues, recommending cost-reduction
strategies and application of best practices to promote Hospitals for a
Health Environment. She administers grant funding applications for
pollution prevention and workforce development in addition to aiding
Quit Site hospitals with their mission to reduce tobacco use in Ohio.
A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Susan earned her
bachelor’s degree in political science/history/economics. She joined the
OHA team in 1999.

Marianne has been president and CEO of
Akron Regional Hospital Association (AHRA) since 1998. She has over 35
years of experience in hospitals and the healthcare field. She
graduated with an Executive MBA from Case Western Reserve University and
a Bachelor’s degree in Health Service Management. She also serves as
OHA's primary contact with ARHA and represents OHA at regional
meetings. She belongs to the American Hospital Association, the
Conference of Metropolitan Hospital Associations and other national,
statewide and local professional and community organizations.
Sarah Metzger

Sarah coordinates emergency preparedness activities for Akron Regional
Hospital Association membership. She also facilitates a grant from Health
and Human Services through the Ohio Department of Health focused on enhanced
emergency preparedness activities for healthcare for a 13 county region.
Sarah attends various local, regional and state meeting to represent
hospitals issues related to emergency readiness and facilitates the
disbursement of approximately $1.6 million in grant dollars annually.
Previous to joining Akron Regional Hospital Association in 2005 Sarah was a
marketing communications professional for a local hospital. She earned her
bachelor’s degree in business and organization communications from the
University of Akron.
Sandra King

Sandra is primarily responsible for the finance, budget and accounting
functions of the association. In addition, she conducts a variety of
compensation and benefits surveys on behalf of the membership. She has a
bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Walsh University in Canton Ohio and has
over twenty five years experience in the finance field. Sandra has been
with ARHA since 2001.
Kathy Dellinger

Kathy is the executive assistant
to the president of ARHA and is responsible for organizing committee
meetings, facilitating the completion of meeting action items, transcribing
minutes and managing all other correspondence relating to committee
meetings. She serves as liaison between the members and the association,
maintains the calendar and schedules appointments for the president. With
ARHA since 2006, Kathy has more than 25 years experience in office
administration including 10 years as the coordinator of a 700+ member youth
ministry program.
