Hospital and health system trustees must provide effective strategic leadership in a
dynamic and rapidly changing environment. Trustees are most effective when they
are able to interpret and analyze information, challenge assumptions and conventional
wisdom, and provide intelligent, well-informed, knowledge-based strategic leadership.
Continuous governance knowledge building can be the difference between a high performance,
high-impact board of trustees and a board that does not fully tap into its
leadership potential.

While hospital and health systems attempt to gain market share through new buildings, new
equipment and new service lines, an additional core strategy holds that the true drivers of
market share are primary care providers (PCP’s). Retaining between 3,000 and 5,000 patients
in a practice, PCP’s exert significant influence on where and how their patients receive care.
Despite brand identity, community image, and the trend toward employment of specialty
physicians, referrals from PCP’s are the key to success for most specialty practices and
hospitals.
This series of educational teleconferences discusses how to get back to the basics by focusing
on where patients enter the healthcare “demand chain” and how to meet the needs, wants and
priorities of key decision makers. It outlines strategies for developing partnerships – between
employed and affiliated primary care physicians, ambulatory specialists, facility-based doctors
and hospitals – that lead to capturing and sustaining market share.

Discrimination, antitrust, due process, impaired and disruptive behavior, on call and EMTALA
challenges…. these are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to day-to-day medical staff challenges.
Today's medical staffs and the professionals who support medical staff functions are facing a multitude of
complex issues, many of which present challenging questions to those involved without access to
immediate solutions. MEDICAL STAFF 2007 is an educational program designed to address current
challenges facing medical staff leadership and their support staff. Each session will present workable
solutions for challenging circumstances. The series is designed to cover not only the hottest issues facing
medical staffs, but also to address current issues in credentialing, corrective action, and fair hearing
processes.
