Upcoming OHA Seminars to Consider
OHA has the following educational seminars in the coming weeks:
Partnering to Combat Emerging Infections - Nov. 2 -
This conference will provide a look at how health care providers along
the entire continuum of care, working with local state and federal
resources, can continue the assault on infectious diseases. Collaborative diligence may become our most effective tool to avoid a return to
an environment resembling the pre-antibiotic era.

Principles Strengthen Relationships Among
Nurses and Support Services
The American Organization of Nurse Executives (AONE) and ARAMARK Healthcare, an OHA
Corporate Partner, released guiding principles to support
hospital nurse executives in building stronger relationships with
those in support functions, such as housekeeping, facilities, food
and clinical technology services. Under the guidance of the two
organizations, 50 nurse executives from across the U.S., Canada and
Ireland gathered to provide input on what a collaborative
partnership between nursing and support services will look like in
the hospital of the future. The resulting

Relationships among Nursing and Support Services in the

several other AONE guiding principles and provides an additional
definition of patient care delivery and hospital work environment
needs of the future.

Time for
Seniors to Get Their Flu Shots
Older adults and those
who care for them should start making plans to get their flu shots,
and should ask their health care providers whether they need other
vaccinations recommended for older people, the American Geriatrics
Society's Foundation for Health in Aging (FHA) suggests.
On the brink of flu season, the FHA has released a
comprehensive and easy-to-understand tip sheet on vaccinations for
seniors. "Increasingly, people are aware of the importance of
getting flu shots, but there are other potentially life-saving
vaccinations that older adults also need, but may not be getting,"
says Meghan Gerety, M.D., chair of the FHA.
It's particularly important that older people stay up
to date with flu, pneumococcal disease, and other vaccines, because
they're more likely than younger adults to get seriously ill if they
contract these illnesses. The flu alone kills more than 20,000
Americans - most of them 65 and older - each year.
Ideally, older adults and those who care for them
should get flu shots in October or November, before the 2007-2008
flu season begins. Seniors should contact their health care providers
to schedule a flu shot, and should also ask their providers whether
they are up-to-date with needed vaccinations for pneumococcal
disease, tetanus, diphtheria, and other potentially deadly
illnesses. Medicare covers flu and pneumococcal shots and, for
people at high risk of other diseases, vaccines that protect against
these diseases.

Knowing What Employees Want
Giving your workforce credit and recognizing their efforts will allow
you to watch performance levels soar, according to a new poll by Maritz
Incentives and Maritz Research. The Maritz poll reveals that 55% of
employees say their company’s recognition efforts have a direct bearing
on individual job performance.
This appears to be an area, however, where companies
may not be maximizing the potential of employee rewards, with only 43%
of respondents believing they are “consistently recognized for their
performance in ways that are meaningful.”
Maritz also grouped reward preferences according to six
different employee types:
1) “award seekers,” who want both money and trophies;
2) “nesters,” who shun travel-related rewards;
3) “bottom liners,” who care little for verbal or written praise but
prefer cash and points programs;
4) “freedom yearners,” who prefer flexibility;
5) “praise cravers,” who will take any kind of recognition they can get;
and
6) “upward movers,” described as the “most satisfied and committed” of
all employees.
Show some appreciation to your employees and reap the
dividends!
