Health Care Response to Intimate Partner Violence
OHA is holding a one-hour phone seminar to discuss intimate partner violence, a growing problem in Ohio hospitals. Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a critical public health issue. One in three women report being abused by a partner at some point in their life.
Despite the health consequences of IPV, according to a recent survey the vast majority of health care providers have never been trained in IPV.  Register now to participate in this phone seminar, or view the brochure to learn more.

Study Searches for Deadly Warning Signs Linking Domestic Violence Victims
A new research study examining a seven-year period with 32 violence-related deaths in Hamilton County, Ohio, found that in more than 80% of the cases, the victim was either separated from the attacker or about to terminate the relationship. In 96% of cases, there were so called “predictors of death.”  These are the same key findings in a new research study led by the University of Cincinnati’s School of Social Work. The research found that 91% of those who died were female, and 16% of the victims had a protection order in place at the time of their deaths. Children were present in the household in 36% of the cases.
The major findings of this study identified the following risk factors (predicators of death).  They are:

►Separated – 83%   Perpetrator mentally ill –31%
Substance abuse – 68% Perpetrator brought a weapon – 29%
Escalating abuse – 56%      Strangulation – 29%
Stalking behaviors – 50% Property damage – 23%

Nationwide Registered Nurse Shortage Persists
The New York Daily News examined the U.S. job market for registered nurses, where demand is “outpacing supply, with over a million U.S. vacancies expected by 2012.”  The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that as a result of the demand for registered nurses, nursing will be the fastest growing industry nationwide for the next five years.  The need is expected to persist as more nurses begin to retire.  According to the American Nurses Association, the average U.S. nurse is nearly 50 years old and is close to retirement. Few young workers are entering the nursing profession to fill their places. In addition, nursing schools are often unable to accommodate new students because of faculty shortages. Nursing teachers are required to hold a master’s degree, but less than half of nurses pursue graduate education, according to a New York State Board of Nursing survey. In the meantime, new nursing graduates are getting job offers with salaries that average $56,000 per year, and many nurses are getting offers for specialized positions, whether or not they have experience.
