2006 OHA Hospital Law Handbook Can Save Hospitals Time, Money

OHA’s 2006 Hospital Law Handbook, a collection of select Ohio statutes and regulations that pertain to health care, is now available for purchase. At a cost of $75 plus $7 shipping for OHA member hospitals, the handbook features information on the following topics: medical liability and peer review; mental health; minors, birth and abortion; environmental provisions; infectious diseases and public health issues; vital statistics; death and dying; physicians and nurses; and mandatory reporting. The 800-page compendium is 10 percent longer than last year’s edition, with new sections related to county hospitals, the new physician assistant and quality measure statutes, and all tort reform statutes. This resource saves hospitals time and money by providing an organized source of actual statutory and regulatory text as of June 30, 2006, with a detailed table of contents—although it is not intended to provide legal advice or substitute for hospital legal counsel. For more information or to order a copy of the 2006 OHA Law Handbook, contact Rhonda Major-Mack at 614.221.7614 or rhondam@ohanet.org.

Jane Elizabeth Hall, RN, BSN

Senior Director, Quality & Risk Management

Barnesville Hospital

Barnesville

A look inside Jane’s nomination – Jane Hall is the Senior Director of Quality and Risk Management, and is a retired Lieutenant Colonel from the Air National Guard.  Jane recently mentioned that she “tries to do something good for somebody everyday without them knowing it.”  She sees the good in everybody and can see “both sides of the story”, which she uses to help others.  Many people go to Jane to gain perspective and to have someone listen to them who will be honest, fair, and kind.

Jane is a patient advocate, helping people navigate the medical mazes of life, particularly the deaf community.  Jane is humble, doing things for others, not for herself.  She is active in medical missionary work in Jamaica, promoting their work and spearheading fund raising efforts.

CMS Publishes IHPPS Final Rule
Tomorrow the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) will publish its final rule on the annual update to the Medicare inpatient hospital prospective payment system (IHPPS), which will go into effect for discharges on or after Oct. 1, 2006.  The final rule’s most significant provisions are a revised Medicare Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) weight calculation and several changes to the DRG patient classifications. CMS backed off an initially-proposed overhaul of the DRGs and weights that would have resulted in widespread Medicare payment redistributions in both federal fiscal years 2007 and 2008.

An OHA member bulletin with more information and a detailed analysis of the rule is available at www.ohanet.org/Bulletins/2006/06-009.htm. (Charles Cataline, charlesc@ohanet.org); Berna Bell, bernab@ohanet.org)

Grenda Bulkowski

Service Line Coordinator, Operating Room

Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center

Findlay

A look inside Grenda’s nomination – Grenda Bulkowski was selected by her co-workers for associate of the month in July 2005. This is considered the most prestigious award at BVHA because the recognition comes from your peers and rewards customer service behaviors that are so integral to success in our industry.  Grenda’s eligibility for associate of the year and ultimately our nominee for the Albert E. Dyckes Healthcare Worker of the Year, resulted in her winning the award based on testimonials from a variety of associates and physicians in every facet of  work here at BVHA. She embodies everything about clinical and service. Grenda’s work ethic sets the bar for the Surgery department. She is consistent, efficient, focused, professional, supportive, fair, and always going out of her way to help those in need. She sets the tone for an efficient and effective work environment and in large part is the reason our surgeons and surgery staff want to come to work every day.
