New Language Clarifies Requirements for Personnel Working with Security Systems
Language addressing hospitals’ concerns was added this afternoon to House Bill 41, which would license security system companies and individuals who sell and install security systems. The original bill, sponsored by Rep. Joseph Uecker (R-Loveland), would have required any individual who sells, repairs, monitors, inspects or maintains a security system to be licensed by the Ohio Department of Commerce. The bill was problematic because it would have required any hospital personnel who are or could potentially be involved with monitoring, inspecting or maintaining any type of security system, including closed-circuit television or key pad access systems, to be licensed by and pay annual licensing fees to the State of Ohio. At the request of OHA, language was added clarifying that the licensure requirement only applies to individuals who work with security systems with the intent of making a profit. Report Examines Impact of Boomers on Tomorrow’s Health Care System

The over-65 population will nearly triple between 1980 and 2030 as a result of the aging Baby Boomers, adding new demands and challenges to an already stressed health system, according to a report released today by the American Hospital Association and First Consulting Group of Long Beach, Calif. The report emphasizes the need for wellness and prevention efforts, adequate health care financing, an increased workforce, technological advancements and other improvements to the health care delivery system.

The report states that by 2030: 14 million Boomers will be living with diabetes, almost half of the Boomers will live with arthritis and more than one out of three will be considered obese. By 2020, Boomers will account for four in 10 office visits to physicians and by 2030 they will account for more than twice as many hospital admissions as they do today as they live longer but with multiple complex conditions. Hospitals are taking steps to prepare for tomorrow, but cooperation from others in the health care sector, the government and the public is vital. May is American Stroke Month
Stroke is the number three killer of all Americans and a leading cause of serious, long-term disability. The burden of stroke is greater among African Americans than in any other group. In fact, blacks have almost twice the risk of first-ever stroke compared with whites, and blacks 35–54 years old have four times the relative risk for stroke.

But there is hope.  You have the power to fight stroke – and win.  By following three simple steps, you can help protect yourself against stroke.

► Reduce your chances of stroke and risk factors by working with your doctor to reduce your risk.

► Recognize the warning signs of stroke.  Stroke is a medical emergency…every second counts!

► Respond by calling 9-1-1 immediately if you or someone close to you is having warning signs of stroke.

Power To End Stroke (PTES) is an aggressive education and awareness campaign that embraces and celebrates the culture, energy, creativity and lifestyles of African Americans. The power is in your hands to prevent and overcome stroke, and the American Stroke Association is here with information and tools to support you every step of the way.

Visit www.strokeassociation.org/presenter.jhtml?identifier=3030549 to take the PTES pledge to reduce your risk of stroke and receive free educational information.

A look inside Charles’ nomination –
To say that Chuck is an exceptional employee, and an exceptional human being, is an understatement. A respiratory therapist, he uses his compassion, skills and understanding of people to set the example for his co-workers, patients and the community. Within Adena Health System, he is known as the "go-to" guy. He is always willing to take on an extra task, look for ways to improve processes, to mentor new employees and train respiratory therapy students. His fellow employees know that if they need help or assistance, Chuck is available any time of the day or night. He will inconvenience himself to help others in their time of need. We are indeed fortunate to have Chuck on the Adena Health System team.
