Hospitals Awarded for Efforts to Keep Patients, Employees Safe
COLUMBUS – For more than 50 years, the OHA Statewide Hospital Safety Campaign has recognized hospitals with the most successful safety programs and superior employee safety records, and this year 28 Ohio hospitals were awarded for their efforts.
This year’s 92 participating hospitals were divided into nine groups based on the number of employees. The hospital with the lowest injury rate in each group was honored at the OHA Recognition Dinner June 20 at the Hilton Columbus at Easton. Hospitals ranking in the top 20 percent overall and the facility with the most outstanding progress in safety rates from last year to this year were also acknowledged.
The following hospitals received safety awards:

Top Twenty Percent Award
Outstanding Progress Award Trinity Medical Center East, Steubenville To participate in the campaign, hospitals submitted information on workplace safety based on the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations, which government hospitals maintain for the Ohio Department of Commerce.
The number of on-the-job injury cases requiring days away from work ranged from zero to 195 this year, and the total number of days missed ranged from zero to 4,162. The safety campaign also considers injury rate, determined by dividing the number of injury cases requiring days away from work per 200,000 hours (the equivalent of one year with 100 full-time employees) by the total number of hours worked at the facility that year. The injury rates for 2005 ranged from zero to 11.3 with an average of 1.72 for participating hospitals.
The safety awards were created in 1953 by OHA and the Industrial Commission of Ohio to promote workplace safety. After 52 years of awards, hospital employee safety is now more important than ever.
The Ohio Hospital Association was established in 1915 and currently represents 170 hospitals and 40 health systems throughout Ohio. OHA is a membership-driven organization that provides proactive leadership to create an environment in which Ohio hospitals are successful in serving their communities.
