Ohio Hospitals Awarded for Workplace Safety
COLUMBUS-For more than 50 years, the Ohio Hospital Association (OHA) Statewide Hospital Safety Campaign has recognized hospitals with the most successful safety programs and superior employee safety records, and this year 23 Ohio hospitals are being awarded for their efforts.
This year 99 hospitals participated and were divided into nine groups according to the number of people they employ. Hospitals with the lowest injury rate in each group, hospitals receiving the top twenty percent award and the facility that displays outstanding progress in safety rates from last year to this year will be acknowledged at the OHA Recognition Dinner on June 12 at the Hilton Columbus at Easton.
The following hospitals are receiving safety awards:
Group Awards:
Top Twenty Percent Award Children’s Medical Center, Dayton Fostoria Community Hospital, Fostoria Genesis HealthCare System, Zanesville Grady Memorial Hospital, Delaware Highland District Hospital, Hillsboro MedCentral Health System Shelby Hospital, Shelby Mercy Hospital of Tiffin, Tiffin Middletown Regional Hospital, Middletown Twin City Hospital, Dennison University Hospital, Cincinnati
Outstanding Progress Award Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center, Cambridge
Ohio hospitals’ outstanding safety efforts also help the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation achieve its statewide goal of reducing costs by preventing injuries.
"Safety is a critical element in every workplace and a priority at the Ohio Bureau of Workers’ Compensation," said CEO/Administrator Bill Mabe. "These hospitals are to be commended for their outstanding safety records and their continued concern for not only creating a safe environment for the people they care for, but their employees and others who visit their facilities."
The number of on-the-job injury cases requiring days away from work ranged from zero to 49 this year, and the total number of days missed ranged from zero to 2,752. Hospitals participating in the OHA safety campaign submit information on workplace safety that they are required to maintain for the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration. The injury rate for each hospital was calculated by dividing the number of injury cases with days away from work per 200,000 hours (the equivalent of one year with 100 full-time employees) by the number of hours worked that year. The injury rates for 2006 ranged from zero to 5.53 with an average of 1.67 for participating hospitals.
The safety awards were created in 1953 by OHA and the Industrial Commission of Ohio to promote workplace safety. With outside organizations recognizing the positive impact it has on their mission, hospital employee safety is now more important than ever.
The Ohio Hospital Association was established in 1915 and currently represents 170 hospitals and 40 health systems throughout Ohio. OHA is a membership-driven organization that provides proactive leadership to create an environment in which Ohio hospitals are successful in serving their communities.
