Mike Abrams joined OHA in February 2012 as president and CEO. He leads a team of 65 associates, supports a 20-member Board of Trustees, serves on a variety of health care and hospital taskforces and committees, and works with 1,900 members of 10 OHA affiliated societies. During 2012 Mike worked with the Board and OHA staff to develop a new, three-year strategic plan focused on a mission to collaborate with member hospitals and health systems to ensure a healthy Ohio. Launched in late 2012, the new plan outlines a bold strategy to focus primarily on advocacy, economic sustainability and patient safety and quality for Ohio hospitals. He works closely with hospital and health system executives and leaders to assess health care trends and review policies impacting the industry.
Prior to OHA, Mike was the Executive Vice President and CEO of the Iowa Medical Society from 1996 to 2012. He previously led government relations for the Indiana State Medical Association for nine years and is a graduate of Indiana University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in public administration. Mike’s additional leadership experience includes service on the Boards of the Midwest Medical Insurance Company and the Iowa Healthcare Collaborative, a joint effort between the Iowa Medical Society and the Iowa Hospital Association to promote a health care culture of continuous improvement in quality, patient safety and value in the state. Mike also served as chair of the Geographic Equity in Medicare Coalition. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Health Policy Institute of Ohio.
He was born in Columbus, Ohio and has extended family in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas. Mike’s wife, Mary Ann Sprauer Abrams, MD, MPH, is a pediatrician originally from Dayton. Mike and Mary Ann have two children.
As an executive assistant to Berna Bell, Charles Cataline and Ryan Biles in OHA’s fiscal policy department, Valerie organizes several committees by preparing meetings and conference calls for her department. She records all appointed members who serve on OHA’s various committees and Board of Trustees dating back to the 1940′s. Valerie also extracts data from Ohio health insurance company quarterly statements for data analyisis. Valerie researches government websites for health care-related articles, studies, reports, testimonials and publications. This information allows OHA staff members to monitor various health-related issues that may impact Ohio hospitals and health care industries. Valerie joined the OHA staff in 1990. She is from Worcester, Mass., and has studied at Columbus State University and PSI Computer Science Institute.
Dorothy is responsible for all aspects of information technology (IT) at OHA. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Ohio Christian University, majoring in psychology. Dorothy joined the OHA staff in 1995. Her hometown is London, Ohio.
Amy leads OHA’s Data Services and Information Technology Divisions which provide data submission and analytical services to Ohio hospitals. She represents hospitals, serving on the Executive Board of the Ohio Health Information Partnership, a public-private, non-profit corporation designated to implement Ohio’s Health Information Exchange and to support adoption and meaningful use of Electronic Health Records. Amy previously served as the Health Information Technology Officer for the State of Ohio and has over fifteen years of senior level management experience in both the public and private sectors in the healthcare and technology industries. Amy served as the Chief of Staff at the Department of Insurance and as the Chief Information Officer for the Ohio Department of Education. Before entering public service, Amy successfully led business units for CVS-Procare, Allscripts and Sarcom.
Jonathan serves as OHA’s federal lobbyist and keeps hospital advocates apprised of the changing winds of both federal health care policy and national politics. Directing OHA’s interaction with Ohio’s Congressional delegation, he coordinates grassroots advocacy and representation efforts on federal issues and is a liaison between member hospitals and national health care organizations. A highly requested guest speaker, Jonathan’s energetic presentations are appreciated by audiences of all sizes, and his entertaining, innovative style makes even complicated public policy issues easy to understand. Prior to joining the OHA team in 2000, Jonathan served as a legislative aide in the Ohio House of Representatives and as a public policy intern in the Parliament of Ireland. Originally from Delaware, Ohio, Jonathan is a nationally registered Emergency Medical Technician and holds a degree in political science from Wittenberg University. He and his wife Kim live in Columbus, Ohio.
Amy coordinates education and training programs for OHA Solutions’ Staffing Program and OHHealthJobs.com for participating member hospitals and contracted agencies. Originally from Grove City, Ohio, Amy received her bachelor’s degree in communications from the University of Cincinnati and attained a PHR (Professional in Human Resources) certification in May of 2002. She is currently a member of the Society of Human Resources Management (SHRM). Prior to joining OHA in 2006, Amy was employed for six years in the human resources department of the Ohio attorney general and the state auditor’s office.
Berna develops advocacy and economic reports on HMOs, Medicare, Medicaid, national health expenditures and Ohio hospital financial performance, and works with state agencies on Medicaid and behavioral health policy. A member of the OHA staff since 1996, Berna is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Originally from Columbus, she has a bachelor’s degree in government from Smith College and a master’s degree in business administration from the Ohio State University Fisher College of Business.
Katelyn assists all departments at OHA through Digital Communications. She manages content and design for the website as well as the creation and distribution of all electronic mailings such as Health e-News+ and CEOhio. In addition, she oversees OHA’s Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter accounts, manages the Albert E. Dyckes Health Care Worker of the Year nominations and assists with the OHA Annual Meeting and recognition dinner. Katelyn, a native of Dayton, Ohio, joined OHA after earning a bachelor’s degree in Strategic Communication from Miami University.
Ryan works with the OHA Board of Trustees on issues related to Medicare, Medicaid, the Hospital Care Assurance Program (HCAP) and the hospital franchise fee, as well as other fiscal issues impacting hospitals. Ryan joined the OHA team in 2000 and previously served as Director of health policy and health policy analyst with the association. He graduated from Northwestern University with a bachelor’s degree in economics and history and is originally from Tampa, Fla.
As senior vice president of Advocacy, Scott provides leadership and strategy for the association’s advocacy efforts; leads OHA’s government and public affairs team; serves as a member of OHA’s senior management team; and works collaboratively with OHA membership, allied organizations and partners. Scott has previously served as the chief policy advisory to Governor Bob Taft, Chief of Staff of the Ohio House and Ohio Senate and CFO for the University of Akron, the private sector as the Executive Director of the Cincinnati Business Committee and as a public and government affairs consultant. Scott earned his Bachelor of Arts degree, cum laude, in Economics from Ohio University.
Heidi works in OHA’s Quality and Data department managing data acquisition and reporting. She works with member hospitals to collect and standardize patient level data for reporting and analysis. Heidi earned her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Ohio University in 2008 and is currently working on her Masters of Business Administration at Capital University. She is originally from Delaware, Ohio and joined OHA’s team in 2009.
Max Carley works in OHA’s Data Services Department supporting and developing software and data products for OHA member hospitals. Prior to joining OHA in 2013, Max worked as a Clinical Informatics Specialist for the Mount Carmel Health System in Columbus, Ohio. Max earned his Bachelor’s degree in Communications from Ohio University in 2010 and is from Columbus.
As part of the fiscal policy staff, Charles is responsible for Medicare, Bureau of Workers’ Compensation policy and reimbursement, Medicaid reimbursement and all finance, admitting and patient financial services policies and procedures. He is also involved with other health care organizations such as the Outpatient Medicare Technical Advisory Group, the American Hospital Association and the Healthcare Financial Management Association. Prior to joining OHA’s staff in 1980, Charles was the business office manager at Mount Carmel East and held financial service jobs with Mount Carmel Medical Center. Charles is a native of Columbus, Ohio, and earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from the Ohio State University
Sherri provides administrative support to OHA’s Center for Education and supports Vice President of Member Development Joe Ruggles. She assists with registration processing and overall program operations. A part of the OHA team since 2006, Sherri received her associate degree in word processing from Columbus State University and is a native of Columbus, Ohio.
Stacey serves as Director for OHA’s Foundation for Healthy Communities, OHA’s non-profit, charitable arm dedicated to health and wellness promotion. The foundation has a vision to help hospitals lead Ohioans to better health. An OHA associate since 1997, Stacey earned her bachelor’s degree in business administration from Otterbein College and is originally from Johnstown, Ohio.
Sharon assists the Administration Department, in OHA’s accounting and HR departments. Sharon has a background as an administrative assistant and office management. Sharon joined OHA’s staff in 2008 and resides in Columbus.
Nancy is the original director of the country’s most comprehensive supplemental staffing program for member hospitals to access temporary staff through the OHA Solutions subsidiary. Initially hired to educate and train member hospitals, her role instantly grew to the creator of tools to manage and support the Staffing Program, as well as the screening of suppliers, implementation of the contracts, marketing, compliance issues and quality audits. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Nancy received dual bachelor degrees from Cleveland State University in communications and theatre arts. Prior to joining OHA, Nancy spent more than 20 years with several Ohio hospitals in managerial, sales and educational capacities and as a patient ombudsman representative.
As part of the Health Economics and Policy team, Aly works on health care policy analysis and development as well as strategic planning. Prior to joining OHA in 2013, Aly did policy work for CareSource and various State of Ohio agencies including Insurance, Aging and Education. Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, Aly graduated from Ohio State University with a bachelor’s degree in English and Masters of Public Administration.
As an administrative assistant to OHA’s quality and data department, Jada facilitates the fulfillment of various projects, coordinates the Research and Educational Foundation (REF) Board, Clinical Advisory Committee (CAC) and Quality Collaboratives. A Columbus native, Jada has studied at Columbus State as well as Central State University and has previous experience working within the airline industry. Jada joined the OHA team in May 2013.
Maria is part of OHA’s Quality and Data team. She works as a Business Intelligence Analyst creating reports and dashboards utilizing business intelligence tools to help analyze hospital data. Prior to joining OHA in 2013, Maria worked as a business intelligence analyst in retail and insurance. Maria earned her bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from DeVry University. She is originally from Toronto, Ontario.
Nancy assists OHA and its members on health policy and legal issues, with an
emphasis on labor and employment law. Originally from Grand Rapids, Mich., Nancy earned her bachelor’s degree in English, honors program, and her juris doctor from the University of Michigan, where she also served as associate editor for the Journal of Law Reform. Prior to joining OHA in 2005, Nancy served as an attorney with the Columbus law offices of Baker & Hostetler and Porter, Wright, Morris & Arthur.
Rick works with the OHA Advocacy team, lobbying the General Assembly and the executive branch for OHA. He has 17 years of experience working in state government and public service. He previously served as director of government affairs for the state auditor, assistant director and legislative liaison for the Ohio Department of Administrative Services and the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, and senior executive assistant for the Ohio Department of Health. He also worked for Gov. George Voinovich’s office. A native of Rocky River, Ohio, Rick earned his bachelor’s degree from Purdue University in political science and history.
Mary Gallagher serves as executive vice president and chief of staff for the Ohio Hospital Association where she oversees OHA’s leadership of the advocacy, health economics & policy, patient safety & quality and member services & operations divisions. Mary has been with OHA since 1997 and previously has served in roles as the chief operating officer, general counsel and director of health policy for the association. Before joining OHA, Mary practiced with the health law group of Baker & Hostetler, LLP, where she represented a wide range of providers and payers.
An honors graduate of the Ohio State University (BA, JD), she is a frequent speaker on health law topics, including board governance and nonprofit law, and an editor and contributor to various health law treatises, including Health Law and Compliance Update, published by CCH Incorporated and State and Federal Prohibitions on Physician Referrals and Hospital Contracts Manual, published by Aspen Publishers, Inc. Mary was recognized 2013 through 2010 as a “top lawyer” by Columbus C.E.O. Magazine and Columbus Business First; by Law & Politics in 2008 and 2009 as an “Ohio Super Lawyer,” in 2006 & 2005 as an “Ohio Rising Star®” and in 2004 as one of the “Top Forty Under 40” business leaders by Columbus Business First.
Morgan is the OHA customer service representative and is responsible for managing the switchboard as well as greeting OHA’s guests. She also supports staff with special assignments. Morgan, a native of Columbus, Ohio, joined the OHA team in 2013.
Jim directs the development and implementation of patient safety and clinical quality programs in collaboration with Ohio hospitals and other health care organizations. He leads a team of quality professionals with clinical backgrounds to evaluate successful hospital patient safety and clinical quality practices, coordinate quality programs across Ohio and facilitate implementation of best practices. Jim has previous experience as a vice president for patient care services and chief nursing officer with St. John Medical Center as well as director for nursing resources and manager for organizational development with University Hospitals Health System. A native of Warren, Ohio, Jim earned his diploma in nursing from Saint Thomas Hospital Medical Center and his Master of Science in Nursing Administration from the University of Akron. He joined the OHA Team in June 2013.
Serving as both a consultant and an advisor, Carol is responsible for emergency preparedness in hospitals and health care delivery systems throughout Ohio. She also serves as the liaison on the state level between hospitals and state agencies to enhance the position of Ohio hospitals and ensure inclusion of hospitals response in statewide decisions, plans, and process. A native of Montoursville, Pa., Carol joined the OHA staff in 2002 after serving as hospital director of safety at the Ohio State University Health System, formerly known as OSU Medical Center.
Paula purchases and maintains an
inventory of all OHA office supplies and coordinates catering services. She is responsible for OHA Center for Education and OHA Annual Meeting program mailings and all other mailing generated by OHA. Originally from Cincinnati, Ohio, Paula joined the OHA team in 1978.
Cliff is responsible for membership services for OHA’s member hospitals throughout Ohio. Prior to joining OHA in 2007, Cliff served five years as chief operating officer of Affinity Health System in Wisconsin. His previous experience includes 14 years at Blanchard Valley Health System in Findlay, where he served as president of Blanchard Valley Regional Health Center and chief operating officer. His experience also includes 15 years at the Ohio State University Hospital. A native of West Lafayette, Ohio, Cliff earned dual bachelor’s degrees in production and operations management and industrial relations in addition to a master’s degree in business administration from the Ohio State University. Cliff also holds a certificate in lean health care from the University of Michigan. He is a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
As executive assistant to Mary Gallagher, Rick Sites, Sean McGlone and Nancy Engbers Falk, Rhonda works with risk management, human resources and nursing issues. She also coordinates OHA’s legal research activities as well as OHA’s annual Safety Campaign. Rhonda joined the OHA team in 2003 after working with the Ohio Board of Nursing as a paralegal in the compliance unit. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Rhonda earned a bachelor’s degree in political science/pre-law from Norfolk State University and a paralegal certificate from the Academy of Court Reporting. She has an MSA in Health Services
Administration from Central Michigan University.
Sean assists OHA members and staff with legal and health policy issues and serves as OHA’s representative regarding workforce development issues. He is OHA’s liaison regarding various state licensing boards for health care providers. Before coming to OHA, Sean worked as an attorney at Bricker & Eckler for six years. Prior to law school, he worked as a legislative staffer in the Ohio House of Representatives. A native of Coshocton, Ohio, Sean earned his bachelor’s degree from Wittenberg University in 1996 and completed law school at Ohio State University in 2002.
Nick provides internal support for all OHA tech based issues. Nick’s
duties include overall network and PC problem-solving, coordinating internal and external support of existing hardware, and software programs. Additionally, he manages licensure compliance for software
programs. Before joining OHA he studied nursing at The University of Cincinnati. He is a native of Findlay, Ohio.
Managing Friends of Ohio Hospitals, Laura is responsible for the accounting, reporting and fundraising coordination of OHA’s political action committee. She also coordinates special projects and provides support to Bridget Gargan, Jonathan Archey, Rick Frank, John Palmer, and Katelyn Bertke in OHA’s Government Affairs department. Before joining the OHA team in 2003, Laura interned with U.S. Rep. Sherrod Brown (D-Lorain, OH). Originally from Seville, Ohio, Laura earned her bachelor’s degree in communication from the Ohio State University. She is currently pursing her associate of applied science in nursing degree at Columbus State Community College.
As a manager in OHA’s Center for Education, Jeannette is responsible for planning meetings for seminars and conventions. She is also secures continuing education credits for seminars and the Annual Meeting. Jeannette joined OHA’s staff in 1991. Her hometown is Bernville, Pa.
John joined OHA in January 2012 and he provides public and media relations support to the public affairs team. He has more than eight years of experience with public relations, communications and marketing from working with a variety of organizations in Ohio including public transportation and higher education. John graduated from Capital University in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in public relations and earned a master’s degree from Ohio University in organizational communication. John is a active member of the Public Relations Society of America’s Central Ohio Chapter serving in a variety of capacities advising area college students and serving on the Board of Directors. John is from Sugar Grove, Ohio.
Erin is responsible for the internal accounting of OHA and its subsidiaries. Erin joined OHA’s staff in 2004 after earning a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Miami University. She completed her Masters of Business from Capital University in 2008. Erin is originally from Lagrange, Ohio.
Kelly works in OHA’s accounting department. She is a graduate of Ohio State University’s Master of Accounting program and earned her CPA license in 2011. Kelly also has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Ohio University and, prior to joining OHA in 2009, worked in the newspaper industry. She is from Hilliard, Ohio.
Jackie works in OHA’s Center for Education assisting Paula Almendinger with personal membership groups and supporting Joe Ruggles and Jeannette Noll with educational programs. She also coordinates webinars and provides support to OHA’s Corporate Partners. She came to OHA in 2005 with a background in insurance, administrative assistance and customer service. Jackie is from Plain City, Ohio, and has an associate’s degree in legal assisting from Columbus State Community College.
Rick leads and supports issue advocacy involving legislative or executive branches. He is the primary liaison
between OHA and the Ohio Department of Health, Ohio
Environmental Protection Agency and Public Utilities
Commission of Ohio. Prior to joining the OHA staff in 1985, he earned a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts from the College of Wooster and both a master of science degree and a juris doctor from the University of Denver Sturm College of Law. Rick also earned a certificate in Health Care Management from the Ohio State University, and previously worked as an attorney for the U.S. Department of Health and Human
Services. Born in Tiffin, Ohio, he is a longtime adjunct
instructor for Central Michigan University in its Master of Science in Administration program.
Brenda oversees OHA’s Unemployment Program. Her responsibilities involve training hospital management staff, assisting in the processing of claims, coordinating schedules for representation hearings before the Ohio Review Commission and generating reports for monthly charges. A member of the OHA team since 1978, Brenda is from Westerville, Ohio.
Greg is responsible for all printing services at OHA. This includes directories, weekly and monthly publications, educational programs and OHA brochures. He joined the OHA team in 1989 after working in the Blue Cross of Central Ohio print shop and the Personal Service Insurance Co. print shop. Greg is a native of Columbus, Ohio
Pam is manager of quality initiatives and coordinates the operations of five regional quality collaboratives in Ohio. She also manages clinical process and outcomes data through OHA’s Core Measure System, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Indicators and transparency initiatives. Before joining the OHA staff in 2012, Pam was an outcomes manager in the cardiovascular service line at Riverside Methodist Hospital. Pam is originally from Fostoria, Ohio but has lived in Columbus, Ohio since pursuing her bachelor’s degree in nursing at The Ohio State University. Pam also has a master’s degree in nursing from Otterbein University.
Cindy provides high level administrative support to OHA senior vice president Reed Fraley, coordinating his schedule plus all functions relating to the Systems CEO Advisory Group and the OHA Small & Rural Committee. A native of Columbus, Cindy began her career at OHA in 1981 as receptionist, moving into Public Affairs prior to her current assignment which started in 2005.
As a member of OHA’s Quality Institute, Virginia serves as liaison with the hospitals participating in OHA’s CARE System. She is also responsible for the preparation of reports for the various quality collaboratives. Prior to joining OHA in 1995, Virginia was a data associate for the Greater Cincinnati Health Council. She earned her bachelor’s degree in economics and graduated magna cum laude from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines, her hometown.
Rosalie works with hospitals on statewide and regional quality and patient safety initiatives, oversees the CSR program and ORYX measurement system, and advises members on the Joint Commission. In addition, she staffs the Ohio Patient Safety Institute (OPSI), which is also a certified Patient Safety Organization. Before joining the OHA staff in 2000, Rosalie was the manager of performance improvement and informatics at Summa Health System. She earned her RN from the Mercy School of Nursing Diploma Program and her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from the University of Akron. Originally from Loudonville, Ohio, she is a member of the National Association of Healthcare Quality and a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
Chris is responsible for the
internal human resources and support services functions at OHA. Chris also manages OHA’s Workers’
Compensation Group Rating Program. Chris has been part of the OHA team since 1974. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Chris attended the Ohio State University.
Stephanie is the claims specialist in OHA’s Unemployment Program. Stephanie
processes claims and works closely with the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services in resolving issues regarding unemployment. Stephanie earned her bachelor’s degree in education from the Ohio State University in 2004. Originally from Westerville, Ohio, she joined OHA’s team in 2007.
Debbie manages both the OHA Salary Survey and OHA/Jones Day Labor Law Project. Debbie is also the contact for Medical Opportunities in Ohio (MOO), a tool used to connect physicians with health care employers and their communities. Debbie coordinates the activities of OHA’s committees and task force including the Nominating and Governance Committees of the OHA Board as well as activities related to Ohio’s allied/regional hospital associations. A native of Ironton, Ohio, Debbie joined OHA in 1982.
Mary provides administrative support for OHA President & CEO Mike Abrams and manages many functions relating to the OHA Board of Trustees and the OHA Executive Committee. She belongs to the national Association of Health Care Administrative Professionals (AHCAP) and the Ohio Society of Healthcare Administrative Professionals (OSHAP). Prior to joining OHA in 1997, Mary worked in fundraising for UNCF: The College Fund. Originally from Hazleton, Pa, she holds a bachelor’s degree from Misericordia University in Dallas, Pa.
Amber promotes, supports and develops software and data products for OHA
member hospitals. She works in OHA’s Data Services Department. Amber earned her bachelor’s degree in health promotions/exercise science from the University of Iowa. Amber’s work experience prior to joining OHA in 2007 includes nine years in outside sales and training for several
national companies, including Eastman Kodak and T-Mobile USA. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Amber also has lived in Peoria, Ill., and more recently in the San Francisco Bay area.
